While the civil war continues in Sudan, the anti-government paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced that it shot down a Sudanese military Antonov plane in the Darfur region. RSF also shared images, claiming they were from the wreckage of the plane. However, there has been no official statement from the Sudanese military yet.
RSF had previously claimed to have targeted transport planes belonging to the Sudanese army and reported shooting down a plane in North Darfur last October.
RSF Leader’s New Threat: “We Will Return to Khartoum”
In a statement made on Sunday, RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo said that their struggle against the army continues, and despite withdrawing from Khartoum, they would return to the capital.
RSF, with a strong base in Darfur, began fighting the Sudanese army about two years ago. However, last month, they were forced to retreat from most areas of Khartoum.
Current Situation in Sudan: Conflict, Hunger, and Humanitarian Crisis
The war in Sudan broke out due to a power struggle between the army and RSF, causing a deadlock in the transition to civilian rule.
While most of Khartoum has been left in ruins, more than 12 million Sudanese have been displaced due to the war.
About half of the country’s 50 million population faces hunger.
The exact death toll is not known, but a study published last year estimated that 61,000 people may have died in the first 14 months of conflict in Khartoum alone.
As the conflict in Sudan continues, concerns over the humanitarian crisis and regional instability are rising, and calls for a ceasefire from the international community persist.
