Response from KLM CEO to Schiphol Airport’s 41% Fee Increase: Ticket Prices Will Rise

KLM CEO Marjan Rintel has criticized Amsterdam Schiphol Airport’s decision to increase airport fees by 41%, stating that this increase will inevitably affect ticket prices. This move by Schiphol has sparked strong reactions from many airlines, particularly KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Schiphol Airport to Become One of Europe’s Most Expensive Airports

The significant fee hike will make Schiphol the second most expensive airport in Europe. KLM officials are concerned that this increase will weaken the competitiveness of the Dutch aviation sector. The additional 40% fee increase over the past three years has already added a financial burden on airlines and passengers.

KLM’s Concerns: Competitiveness and Economic Impact

CEO Marjan Rintel highlighted two main issues arising from Schiphol’s fee increase. First, she argued that the recovery costs from COVID-19 are unfairly passed onto airlines and passengers. Rintel noted that, compared to other major European airports, Schiphol’s pricing policy is far higher, potentially jeopardizing the Netherlands’ status as a leading European air transport hub.

Necessary Infrastructure Improvements

While KLM acknowledges the urgent need for improvements in Schiphol Airport’s infrastructure, it emphasized that the terminals, some dating back to the 1960s, now require modernization. Although significant construction projects are planned to expand and develop sustainable infrastructure, KLM stressed the importance of a financially sustainable approach.

Fee Differences with Other European Airports

Schiphol’s fees remain high compared to major airports like Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Copenhagen. This could lead passenger traffic to shift toward lower-fee competitors, potentially impacting tourism and business travel in the Netherlands.

Increased Costs Passed on to Passengers

KLM has underscored that this fee increase will inevitably be passed on to ticket prices, adding further pressure to an industry already facing high costs during the post-COVID-19 recovery. While concerns have been raised about the long-term impact on the Dutch aviation sector and tourism potential, this substantial change could reshape the competitive landscape in European aviation.
