An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner made a safe landing after its emergency system was activated during the Amritsar–Birmingham flight. The airline confirmed that the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), which deploys from the underside of the aircraft, had been activated, indicating a possible engine malfunction.
Shortly before 19:00 BST on Saturday, the aircraft completed flight AI117 and was grounded for inspection, leading to the cancellation of the subsequent Birmingham–Delhi service. The airline stated that alternative accommodation arrangements were provided for passengers.
In a statement, Air India said: “All electrical and hydraulic parameters were normal, and the aircraft landed safely. The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.”
The RAT system automatically deploys during flight if both engines lose power or if hydraulic pressure drops to critical levels, supplying limited power to essential systems. However, Air India emphasised that such conditions did not occur in this incident.
Experts recalled that another case involving RAT deployment occurred in June and noted that this incident once again highlights the importance of rigorous technical inspection procedures within the fleet.
