Morocco’s flag carrier, Royal Air Maroc (RAM), is preparing to sign large-scale deals with Boeing and Airbus to renew and expand its fleet. According to sources familiar with the matter, the airline is nearing a major order for Boeing 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner aircraft. Meanwhile, for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, RAM is also preparing to acquire jets from Airbus.

Expected to Be Announced at the Paris Airshow

Industry sources report that RAM has placed a substantial order with Boeing, including around 20 long-haul 787s and approximately 50 737 models. This major deal is expected to be officially announced during the Paris Airshow, taking place from June 17 to 23.

At the same time, RAM is also set to order 20 Airbus A220 aircraft, marking its first commercial aircraft purchase from the French manufacturer since 2001. While RAM’s current fleet mainly consists of Boeing aircraft, a small number of Embraer and ATR regional jets are also in operation.

RAM Plans to Quadruple Its Fleet in Ten Years

RAM CEO Abdelhamid Addou stated last year that, in response to growing passenger demand, the airline aims to quadruple its fleet over the next decade and become one of Africa’s largest carriers. Morocco’s co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal forms a strategic pillar of this ambitious expansion plan.

The country also plans to increase its airport capacity to handle 78 million passengers annually. In this context, RAM’s aircraft investments play a strategic role in expanding the national airline’s capacity and boosting tourism revenue.

Improved Relations with France Pave the Way for Airbus Order

Following French President Emmanuel Macron’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan regarding Western Sahara, diplomatic ties between the two countries have strengthened. According to sources, these developments—as well as France’s air traffic rights policy toward Royal Air Maroc—have influenced the Airbus order.

RAM’s previous Airbus order was limited to just four A321 aircraft. Now, this new A220 agreement signals the beginning of a new era in commercial relations between Morocco and Airbus.

RAM Strengthens Ties with Boeing – Opens the Door to Airbus After 25 Years

RAM’s long-standing strategic partnership with Boeing goes beyond aircraft orders—it also supports Morocco’s emergence as a production and supply hub in the aviation sector. Numerous Boeing suppliers operate in the country, and the partnership is helping Morocco become a regional aviation centre.
