Pratt & Whitney Engine Crisis Forces airBaltic to Cancel 4,670 Flights

A significant decision shaking the European aviation sector has led airBaltic (BT) to cancel 4,670 flights from its planned 2025 summer schedule. The root cause is delays in Pratt & Whitney’s engine maintenance programs, which have severely impacted the airline’s Airbus A220-300 fleet.

40 Routes Affected: Some Fully Suspended

The maintenance bottleneck has grounded several A220-300 aircraft throughout 2025. A total of 40 routes are impacted, with 19 routes fully suspended and flight frequencies reduced on 21 others.

This operational reduction will directly affect 67,160 passengers who had planned summer vacations with airBaltic.

Maintaining Baltic Connections

Despite operational challenges, the airline remains committed to maintaining air connections between the Baltic States and key destinations across Europe and beyond. Serving over 70 destinations, airBaltic is determined to continue providing essential regional links.

Global Supply Chain Challenges

airBaltic faces unprecedented operational challenges due to global supply chain disruptions and maintenance constraints. The airline has implemented extensive customer support measures to minimize inconvenience for affected passengers.

Passengers can process alternative flight arrangements or refund requests through airBaltic’s online booking management system. Additional assistance is available via airBaltic’s Call Center and third-party booking platforms.

Modern Fleet and Extensive Network Operations

airBaltic continues to operate across 130 routes from hubs in Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Tampere, and its seasonal base in Gran Canaria. Its modern fleet consists of 49 Airbus A220-300 aircraft operated by over 2,700 aviation professionals.

The airline’s hybrid business model combines traditional network carrier services with low-cost operational efficiencies, solidifying airBaltic’s position as the leading carrier in the Baltic region and one of Europe’s fastest-growing airlines.
