A passenger plane belonging to American Airlines, flying from Puerto Rico to Texas, was forced to return shortly after takeoff when a passenger mistook a text message for a bomb threat. The incident caused brief panic on board.
According to The New York Post, the flight from San Juan to Dallas went into emergency mode after a passenger noticed another traveler’s phone displaying a message with the text “RIP” (Rest In Peace). Interpreting the message as a potential threat, the passenger alerted the cabin crew.
About half an hour after takeoff, the plane made an emergency landing at Puerto Rico’s Isla Verde Airport. Authorities questioned the passenger who received the message.
The Truth Revealed
During the questioning, it was learned that the passenger who received the message had recently lost a loved one and was traveling to Dallas to attend a condolence visit. The Puerto Rico Office of Explosives and Public Safety confirmed that there was no explosive threat on board.
After the incident, the passenger plane took off again from Puerto Rico and safely landed in Texas the following day. American Airlines has not made any official statement regarding the matter.
