Passenger Arrested at JFK Airport for Attempting to Join ISIS

On November 5, 2024, Syed Aman was arrested at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Aman intended to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Aman, a U.S. citizen residing in Nassau County, New York, was detained by the FBI while trying to board a flight to Doha (DOH) with plans to reach ISIS-controlled areas in Syria. According to documents filed in Brooklyn federal court, Aman expressed support for ISIS on social media in 2023 and 2024 and allegedly sent money to someone he believed was an ISIS member active in Syria.

Aman’s desire to engage in jihad was further revealed in conversations with a confidential human source (CHS) cooperating with the FBI. In these discussions, Aman stated that traveling to ISIS-controlled regions and fighting for ISIS was his top priority. He expressed hatred toward “those who deny the path of Allah” and shared his desire to “kill Americans.”

Arrest and FBI Investigation

Aman had planned to travel through Doha to reach Syria and reportedly intended to carry a metal pen as a defensive weapon, stating he would use it to attack law enforcement if detained. He was arrested at JFK Airport just before boarding, and the metal pen was found in his belongings.

In a statement from Assistant Attorney General for National Security Matthew G. Olsen and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Breon Peace, Aman’s arrest was cited as part of strict measures against security threats in the U.S. The case involves the FBI’s National Security Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Antoinette N. Rangel leading the prosecution in the Eastern District of New York.
