Turbulence panic on Spain–Italy route: Wizz Air plane forced to divert to Bologna
A Wizz Air flight from Spain to Italy was hit by severe turbulence, leaving passengers terrified. The Airbus A321 operating the Alicante–Rome service was unable to land in Rome due to adverse weather and was diverted to Bologna.
The incident occurred on 20 August on flight W4 6038 from Alicante to Rome Fiumicino Airport. After several failed landing attempts due to a powerful storm and heavy turbulence over Rome, the pilots were forced to abandon the approach. For safety reasons, the aircraft diverted to Bologna Airport, nearly 400 kilometres away.
Videos shared on social media show passengers screaming in panic during the turbulence, with shouts of “Oh my God!” and “No!” echoing through the cabin. Despite the seatbelt signs being switched on, the violent shaking sparked fear and distress among travellers.
Following a three-hour journey, the aircraft landed safely in Bologna at 03:57 local time. Passengers were later transferred to Rome by bus.
In a statement, Wizz Air confirmed that the diversion was due to adverse weather conditions, adding:
“Passengers were provided with onward transportation from Bologna to Rome. Those who arranged their own travel will be reimbursed. Safety is Wizz Air’s highest priority.”
The airline also thanked the pilots and cabin crew for ensuring passenger safety during the turbulence.
