The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has thanked Turkey for its decision, made upon the instruction of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to resume Turkish Airlines flights to Sulaymaniyah. It was emphasised that the decision reflects the strong relations between the two sides.
Erdoğan’s Instruction for Sulaymaniyah Flights
In a written statement issued by the KRG Presidency, it was noted that during the meeting between KRG President Nechirvan Barzani and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Erdoğan instructed that Turkish Airlines flights to Sulaymaniyah be resumed and the airspace be reopened.
The statement read: “We extend our gratitude and appreciation to Mr Erdoğan. This decision is based on the strong relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Republic of Turkey, strengthens mutual cooperation and support, and serves the common interests of both sides, particularly benefiting the people of Sulaymaniyah.”
Governor of Sulaymaniyah: “Official Decision Taken”
Sulaymaniyah Governor Haval Abubakir announced that the decision to lift Turkey’s flight ban on Sulaymaniyah International Airport has been officially made.
Governor Abubakir stated that KRG President Nechirvan Barzani’s intensive contacts with Ankara were decisive in this process. He added that an official electronic correspondence from the Turkish Civil Aviation Authority to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Iraqi Federal Government is expected to be received, and once the technical process is completed, Turkish Airlines will resume its flights to Sulaymaniyah.
Expected Economic and Commercial Impact
Officials say that with the reopening of the airspace and the resumption of flights from Turkey in the coming days, a significant increase in regional trade volume is expected.
It is assessed that the decision will mark a new era not only in passenger transport but also in regional economic cooperation and mutual trust.
