NTSB Report Reveals: Birds Drove FedEx Plane Toward Disaster in Mid-Air

A FedEx Boeing 767 cargo plane that made an emergency landing at Newark Airport was found to have suffered bird strikes in both engines.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary report on Wednesday regarding the accident involving FedEx Flight 3609 on March 1, 2025. According to the report, the Boeing 767-300F cargo aircraft, which had departed from Newark Liberty International Airport en route to Indianapolis, was struck by birds in both engines.

Explosion in the Cockpit, Flames in the Sky

The co-pilot reported seeing three white birds at approximately 500 feet and issued a “birds” warning. Moments later, a “sudden explosion” was heard in the cockpit. The pilots reported moderate to severe vibrations, and the fire indicator for the right engine was triggered.

Air traffic control confirmed observing flames coming from the right engine. The pilots declared an emergency, shut down one engine, and successfully made an emergency landing back at Newark. No injuries were reported among the two pilots and the sole passenger, who was also a pilot.

Bird Remains and Damaged Engines

According to the NTSB’s preliminary findings, bird remains were discovered in both jet engines. The right engine’s fan blade was fractured, and part of the exhaust system detached and landed in a grassy area near the I-95 highway. The detachment caused significant internal damage to the engine.

Bird Strikes: Common but Potentially Severe

According to the FAA’s wildlife strike database, 137 wildlife collisions were reported at Newark Airport in 2024 alone. Bird strikes usually occur during takeoff or landing and can vary in severity.

Final Report Expected in 2026

The NTSB continues its in-depth investigation. A detailed technical analysis of flight data and engine components is underway, and the final report is expected to be released within approximately one year.
