Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu made significant announcements on BRT’s 50+1 program hosted by Levent Kutay. Ataoğlu revealed plans to establish a new airline in Northern Cyprus, emphasizing its potential to contribute to tourism, transportation, and economic development.
Reviving Cyprus Turkish Airlines
Minister Ataoğlu expressed support for the initiative spearheaded by businessman Muhammet Yaşarata. He explained that the new airline would operate in connection with Turkish Airlines while maintaining an independent structure. He stated:
“This initiative will be a major step toward reviving the defunct Cyprus Turkish Airlines. The new airline will lay a solid foundation for creating a sustainable system.”
Reducing Ticket Prices
Recalling past airline initiatives that failed due to insufficient support, Ataoğlu highlighted that similar mistakes will not be repeated:
“At that time, we didn’t support the airline, which led to its downfall. However, during its operation, ticket prices were significantly reduced. By supporting this new airline, we will ensure that ticket prices remain sustainable and accessible.”
Base Fare Implementation Between Turkey and Northern Cyprus
Ataoğlu pointed out that high ticket prices for flights between Turkey and Northern Cyprus negatively impact regional tourism. He proposed implementing a base fare policy:
“We want to make Northern Cyprus a preferred destination from every part of Turkey. However, high ticket prices are a major obstacle. Our efforts aim to bring prices to reasonable levels, which will create significant momentum in tourism and promotional activities.”
The Importance of Digital Promotion and Accessible Transportation
Highlighting ongoing digital campaigns to promote Northern Cyprus, Ataoğlu emphasized the need to address transportation issues to maximize their impact:
“Promoting Northern Cyprus digitally is moving quickly. However, making ticket prices more affordable will enhance the effectiveness of these promotions. The new airline is a crucial step in achieving this goal.”
