Wichita, Kansas / Washington, D.C. – Textron Aviation Defense has introduced the Beechcraft M-346N advanced jet trainer, developed jointly with Leonardo, as part of the U.S. Navy’s Next-Generation Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) initiative. This modern twin-engine jet is designed to replace the long-serving T-45 Goshawk aircraft and provide naval aviators with a 21st-century training solution.
Advanced Systems, Proven Platform
Based on Leonardo’s M-346 Master platform, the Beechcraft M-346N is equipped with a range of advanced systems to enhance flight safety and mission effectiveness. Key features include:
-
Quad-redundant fly-by-wire flight control system
-
Full glass cockpit with Head-Up Displays (HUD) and Large Area Displays (LAD)
-
HOTAS controls in both cockpits
-
Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto-GCAS)
-
Integrated training ecosystem supported by real-time performance monitoring
Powered by two Honeywell F124-GA-200 turbofan engines, the jet offers a top speed exceeding 590 knots and a service ceiling of 45,000 feet.
UJTS: A New Era for U.S. Navy Training
The U.S. Navy plans to acquire approximately 145 new trainer jets to replace the aging T-45 fleet, which suffers from structural fatigue, outdated avionics, and physiological issues that hinder modern, safe pilot training.
The Navy has indicated it may relax its requirement for carrier landing capability in the new system, allowing for greater design flexibility. This opens the door for the M-346N to compete closely with rivals such as the Boeing/Saab T-7A Red Hawk and Lockheed/KAI T-50.
M-346 Family: Global Success and Training Innovation
The Beechcraft M-346N is a U.S. Navy-specific adaptation of the M-346 platform, already in service with the air forces of Italy, Israel, Singapore, and Poland. The platform integrates live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) simulation environments and offers AI-supported, personalized training solutions.
This training architecture ensures a seamless transition from basic flight training to advanced tactical instruction.
What Sets This Contender Apart
According to a joint statement from Textron and Leonardo, the Beechcraft M-346N:
-
Meets the Navy’s new expectations for flexible carrier training requirements
-
Provides integrated training solutions that combine basic and complex mission instruction
-
Delivers high performance and low operating costs, offering a sustainable long-term training solution
