New Rule at Turkish Airlines: Co-Pilots to Take Control Only If Captain Becomes Incapacitated!

Turkish Airlines (THY) A320 Type Directorate has introduced a significant operational adjustment for flight crews within its fleet. According to the official communication dated 12 May 2025, second officers holding P5 and P6 status will only be permitted to perform take-offs and landings in A321 NEO aircraft if the captain becomes incapacitated.

Implemented with a Focus on Flight Safety

In a statement released via THY’s internal communication channels, it was emphasised that the decision has been made entirely within the framework of flight safety. It was clearly stated that second officers at the P5 and P6 levels are not authorised to take command of the aircraft unless the captain is unable to continue flying.

Authorisation Strictly Limited to Emergency Situations

The announcement read: “Flight safety is our top priority. Second officers with P5/P6 status may only undertake take-off and landing manoeuvres in the event that the captain becomes incapacitated. This rule must be strictly adhered to.”

Experience Graded Through Status System

At THY, second officers are categorised by experience level from P6 to P3. P6 represents newly appointed second officers, while P3 denotes those at the highest level of experience in that role. Captains are similarly ranked with C2 and C1 levels.

This regulation aims both to uphold the highest standards of flight safety and to ensure that pilots operate with a graduated sense of responsibility.
