A significant new regulation aimed at enhancing passenger safety on flights to the United States has come into effect. According to a joint announcement by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), seven types of battery-powered devices will no longer be allowed in checked baggage.
Fire risk from lithium batteries a key concern
The new directive primarily aims to reduce the risk of fires that lithium-ion batteries could pose during flights. FAA and TSA officials pointed out the potential dangers of transporting these devices in aircraft cargo holds rather than the cabin, describing the measure as a preventive step to ensure flight safety.
Ban effective as of today
The announcement stressed that the new rule came into force on 28 May 2025. A detailed list of the prohibited devices will be provided to passengers by airlines. The restriction applies to all passengers travelling to the United States or on domestic US flights.
Passenger advisory: Carry portable devices in hand luggage
Officials noted that the banned devices may still be carried in hand luggage but must be properly stored in the cabin. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for detailed information before travelling in order to avoid inconvenience.
