Mount Etna, one of Italy’s active volcanoes, has caused significant disruptions to air travel due to recorded volcanic activity. The eruption, located to the south of the volcano, temporarily halted air traffic, leading to the cancellation of incoming flights.
Measures in Place at Fontanarossa Airport
Measures have been implemented at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport to ensure the safety of air traffic, and these measures will remain in effect until at least 22:30. Currently, only aircraft already at the airport are allowed to take off.
Volcanic Ashfall Disrupts Daily Life
The volcanic activity is also affecting nearby settlements. Intense volcanic ashfall has been observed in several municipalities, including San Pietro Clarenza. The fine ash layer is covering rooftops, roads, and vehicles, disrupting transportation and daily life. Authorities have warned local residents to take precautions.
