Turkey Writes a Global Success Story in Civil Aviation

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu celebrated Turkey’s milestones in civil aviation on International Civil Aviation Day (December 7). He emphasized that Turkey aims for global leadership by maximizing civil aviation capacity and implementing strategic measures to achieve this goal.

According to Minister Uraloğlu, Turkey has increased domestic flight destinations by 123%, from 26 in 2003 to 58 by 2024. New airports, such as those in Yozgat and Bayburt-Gümüşhane, are under construction, and domestic flight frequencies are set to increase by 10% in 2025.

Expanding Turkey’s International Aviation Network

Turkey has also made significant strides in international aviation. While flights in 2003 covered 60 destinations in 50 countries, this number has soared to 348 destinations in 131 countries by 2024. Turkish Airlines (THY) has introduced a new Kuala Lumpur-Sydney route and will launch flights to Chile via Istanbul-Sao Paulo-Santiago on December 18, 2024, with four weekly frequencies. These developments further solidify Turkey’s position in the global aviation market.

Air Transport and Eco-Friendly Initiatives

Minister Uraloğlu highlighted Turkey’s commitment to safety, comfort, and environmental sustainability in aviation. Fifty airports have obtained certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, underscoring efforts to provide eco-friendly aviation services.

Growth and Development in Turkish Aviation

The growth in civil aviation extends beyond new destinations. The total number of aircraft increased from 489 in 2003 to 1,856 as of November 2024. The number of passenger planes grew by 347.5%, from 162 to 725. Seat capacity rose by 415%, from 27,599 to 142,147.

Cargo capacity has also seen a dramatic rise, increasing by 794.5%, from 302,737 kg in 2003 to 2,707,875 kg in 2024. By November 2024, a total of 214,232,000 passengers had been transported.

Turkey’s Aviation Industry on the Rise

Minister Uraloğlu reiterated Turkey’s commitment to solidify its aviation achievements on the international stage and continue expanding passenger capacity. He emphasized that the growth rate of the sector remains robust, positioning Turkey as a leading global aviation hub.
