At the Annual Review Meeting, Minister Güler shared critical updates on Turkey’s defense and security policies, including the F-35 fighter jets, the ongoing F-16 procurement process, the TF-2000 destroyer, and the domestic aircraft carrier projects. F-16 Procurement Continues, Engagement Planned on F-35 Program
Minister Güler noted that discussions for the purchase of 40 F-16s are ongoing at a technical level as part of efforts to enhance Turkey’s defense capacity. He also stated that a favorable process is underway regarding Eurofighter Typhoon jets, with two British Eurofighter aircraft scheduled for examination in Ankara on December 18.
Regarding the F-35 program, Güler emphasized the potential contributions of these aircraft to Turkey’s defense capabilities. He expressed hopes of revisiting the F-35 project and addressing CAATSA sanctions with the new U.S. administration. Turkey plans to maintain its diplomatic engagements on this matter.
As a NATO ally, Turkey views the denial of F-35 deliveries and the imposition of CAATSA sanctions as unjust practices.
Production of TF-2000 and Domestic Aircraft Carrier to Begin in 2025
Minister Güler provided updates on domestic defense initiatives, stating that design activities for the TF-2000 air-defense destroyer and the national aircraft carrier are progressing. Production for these projects is scheduled to begin in 2025.
He added that steel-cutting operations for the projects would commence in the early months of the upcoming year. Güler affirmed Turkey’s commitment to remaining a decisive defense power at both regional and global levels.
S-400 Air Defense System: No Change in Turkey’s Stance
Addressing questions about the S-400 air defense system, Güler reiterated that Turkey’s position on this issue remains unchanged. He described the system as strategically important for Turkey’s defense capabilities.
A Transformational Period for Turkish Defense Industry
Minister Güler stated that Turkey is undergoing one of its most intense and comprehensive periods in defense advancements since the War of Independence. He underlined that the primary goal is to position the Turkish Armed Forces as a deterrent, effective, and operationally ready power in the region. In this context, special emphasis is being placed on indigenous and national defense projects.
