Million-Dollar ‘Slide’ Incident on EVA Air Flight BR65

The emergency slide incident involving EVA Air at Taoyuan Airport resulted in millions of dollars in damages and a two-hour delay. Passengers were transferred to another aircraft, and the airline announced that it will review its operational procedures.

Taiwan-based EVA Air experienced a significant disruption due to an unexpected operational incident that occurred late at night between the 12th and 13th at Taoyuan Airport. On flight BR65, which was scheduled to operate the Vienna route, the emergency slide was accidentally deployed by maintenance personnel during pre-flight checks, causing damage worth millions of dollars.

The incident became apparent at around 23:35 when an announcement from the cockpit instructed all passengers to disembark from the aircraft. Subsequent investigation revealed that the emergency slide release mechanism at door number 2 had been unintentionally activated during routine testing. As emergency slides are single-use and deploy within approximately five seconds, its activation necessitated a complete replacement of the equipment.

Following the disruption, all passengers who had already boarded the aircraft were evacuated and directed to another aircraft of the same model. The replacement flight was able to depart at 01:27, roughly two hours later than the scheduled departure. In addition to causing a significant delay for passengers, the incident reportedly resulted in substantial financial loss for the airline.

EVA Air issued an official apology to the passengers affected by the delay and announced that operational procedures would be reviewed and staff training reinforced to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Similar incidents have also occurred in the international aviation industry. In recent months, a Delta Air Lines flight attendant accidentally deployed an emergency slide, causing a four-hour delay. According to foreign sources, the cost of an accidental emergency slide deployment can reach up to $100,000.
