Lufthansa Places Order for 15 Additional Airbus A350-1000s

The Lufthansa Group has announced an expansion of its partnership with Airbus, placing an order for 15 more Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. This brings the total confirmed orders for this model from 10 to 15. Scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2031, the total value of the deal is approximately $2 billion, based on list prices.

Lufthansa Group: One of the Largest A350 Customers Globally

With a total of 60 Airbus A350-900s and 15 Airbus A350-1000s on order, the Lufthansa Group solidifies its position as one of the largest global customers for the A350 model. This step is seen as a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to build a modern and sustainable fleet.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commented on the order:

“Today’s order underscores our great trust in Airbus and our long-standing, successful partnership. With state-of-the-art A350 jets, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our history. This is one of our most significant investments towards achieving our sustainability goals and providing our customers with a first-class travel experience.”

Impact on the Fleet

The Lufthansa Group’s fleet currently consists of approximately 740 commercial aircraft, following a strategy that emphasizes quality, cost efficiency, and emissions reduction. The new A350s will replace older four-engine models, including:

  • Boeing 747-400
  • Airbus A340-600
  • Airbus A340-300

Key Features of the New A350-1000 Aircraft:

  • Up to 35% lower fuel consumption.
  • Significant reductions in CO₂ emissions.
  • 15% more passenger capacity compared to the A350-900.

The Lufthansa Group has now secured agreements for approximately 250 new fuel-efficient aircraft.

Commitment to Sustainability

Lufthansa Group reaffirms its commitment to environmental sustainability with clear targets:

  • 2030: Reduce net CO₂ emissions by 50% compared to 2019 levels.
  • 2050: Achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions.

Conclusion

The new Airbus order represents a crucial step toward the company’s operational and environmental objectives. With these additions, the Lufthansa Group fleet will not only become more modern and efficient but also set a benchmark in the aviation industry for environmental consciousness.
