Kayseri Poised to Become a New Production Hub in the Defence Industry!

Kayseri is making a major leap in the defence and aerospace sectors with a massive investment!

A $1.6 billion Aerospace and Defence Specialised Organised Industrial Zone (OIZ) is set to be established in Kayseri, strengthening Turkey’s domestic and national production capacity. This significant investment will further advance the city’s strategic position in the defence industry.

A Vast 3.4 Million Square Metre Production Area

Speaking at the “Kayseri Defence Industry Provincial Meetings” held at the Kayseri Chamber of Industry (KAYSO), KAYSO President Mehmet Büyüksimitci announced that the OIZ will span 3.4 million square metres. The project aims to become a critical production centre for the space, aviation, and defence industries.

Kayseri’s Rapid Growth in the Defence Sector

Defence Industry President Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün highlighted Kayseri’s growth in the sector during his speech at the meeting. According to the data shared by Görgün:

  • In 2019, 34 defence industry firms operating in Kayseri generated a total revenue of $22.5 million.
  • By 2024, the number of firms had increased to 55, with revenue reaching $72 million.

A Deep-Rooted History in Defence

Kayseri holds a historically significant place in Turkey’s defence industry. The TOMTAŞ Aircraft Factory, established in 1926, was one of Turkey’s first steps into the aviation sector.

Key defence activities in Kayseri include:

  • Maintenance and modernisation of A400M transport aircraft
  • Tank modernisation projects
  • Domestic battery production and energy storage technologies

Additionally, critical facilities such as the 2nd Air Maintenance Factory Directorate and the 2nd Main Maintenance Factory Directorate solidify Kayseri’s status as a strategic centre in the defence industry.

Global Competitiveness Through High-Tech Production

The new OIZ aims to increase localisation rates in Turkey’s domestic defence industry and promote high-tech production. The project will enable the production of critical technologies, enhancing Turkey’s competitiveness in the international market.
