A JetBlue aircraft belonging to the US-based airline made an emergency landing at Tampa International Airport in Florida after experiencing a sudden loss of altitude shortly after taking off from Cancun, Mexico. At least 15 passengers were injured in the incident.
According to official statements released on Friday, JetBlue’s Airbus A320 aircraft was en route from Cancun to Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday when it suffered the altitude loss. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the aircraft was diverted to Tampa around 2:00 p.m. local time after “the crew experienced a flight control issue.”
15 Passengers Taken to Hospitals
Tampa Fire Rescue spokesperson Vivian Shedd stated that passengers and crew were met by medical teams upon landing.
Initial reports indicated that between 15 and 20 passengers were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
JetBlue officials said in a statement following the incident, “We will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident.” The FAA has also launched an independent investigation into the matter.
Aircraft Taken Out of Service for Inspection
JetBlue announced that the Airbus A320 aircraft has been taken out of service until safety inspections are completed.
According to the airline’s official website, the aircraft has 162 seats. The exact number of people on board has not yet been disclosed.
Audio recordings from LiveATC.net revealed that pilots reported a “flight control issue” during communication with air traffic control and mentioned that some passengers and crew members, including those with head injuries, required medical attention.
