Turkey’s defense industry giant Baykar held a crucial meeting as part of its acquisition process of Piaggio Aerospace, one of Italy’s key aviation companies. During negotiations with Italian labor unions, Baykar faced demands regarding its industrial plan and job security assurances.
Unions Play a Key Role
Piaggio Aerospace, which operates a production facility in Villanova d’Albenga, has been under special administration since December 2018. In line with the preliminary agreement approved by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy on December 27, 2024, a meeting was held with the unions. The unions’ stance is considered critical in the approval process of the sale.
Baykar’s CEO, Haluk Bayraktar, attended the meeting and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to investing in Piaggio Aerospace. However, union representatives demanded clear guarantees regarding the industrial plan and the protection of existing jobs.

Baykar’s Investment Strategy
Following the acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace, Baykar aims to establish a strong presence in both civil and military aviation. The meeting addressed Piaggio Aerospace’s role in Baykar’s strategic planning, future production plans, and workforce structure.
Meanwhile, under Italy’s “golden share” policy, the future of the state-controlled shares in Piaggio Aerospace remains uncertain. Throughout the process, Baykar continues to maintain close contact with the Italian government and labor unions.
Union Demands
Italian labor unions have requested commitments to job security and the preservation of production capacity under the company’s new management. They also called for clarification of Baykar’s long-term industrial plans.
Baykar’s Growing Influence
As Turkey’s leading unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturer, Baykar aims to strengthen its global position through the acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace. With this move, the company seeks to become a significant player in Italy’s civil and military aviation sectors.
