According to media reports, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) intercepted an Iranian cargo plane suspected of carrying weapons to Hezbollah in Syrian airspace and forced it to turn back mid-flight.
The Times of Israel Report
The Times of Israel reported that the incident occurred on the night between Saturday and Sunday. Citing defense sources, the report stated that the plane was suspected of transporting weapons to the Hezbollah terrorist organization in Lebanon.
IAF fighter jets intercepted the Iranian plane over Syria and ordered it to turn back. Following the instructions, the plane altered its course and returned.
Preventing Arms Smuggling During Ceasefire
The intervention took place during a ceasefire period between Israel and Hezbollah. The ceasefire, approved by the governments of Lebanon and Israel on Wednesday, required Hezbollah to withdraw north of the Litani River.
Critics in Israel claim that Hezbollah might exploit the ceasefire as an opportunity to rearm. The Israeli government, however, has assured that the ceasefire will be strictly monitored to ensure security along the northern border and to prevent threats from Hezbollah.
Regional opponents of Iran mocked the Iranian regime following the forced return of the plane.
