Russia has delivered Su-35SE Flanker-E fighter jets to Iran. According to Flugrevue, the delivery began following a special ceremony held at Russia’s Komsomolsk-on-Amur aircraft production facility. Two disassembled Su-35SE jets were transported to Mehrabad Airport in Iran aboard an Antonov An-124-100 transport aircraft and subsequently moved to an airbase in Hamadan for assembly.
Assembly and Training Phase to Begin
Once the aircraft assembly is complete, comprehensive ground tests will be conducted on systems such as engines, flight controls, and weapons integration. Following these tests, Iranian pilots will commence test flights to familiarize themselves with the capabilities of the aircraft.
A training program supported by Russian experts aims to ensure not only the pilots but also ground crews gain proficiency in maintaining the Su-35SE. These advanced jets, equipped with sophisticated radar and avionics systems, require high technical expertise and a consistent supply chain for spare parts.
IRIAF’s Modernization Initiative
The delivery of Su-35SE to Iran marks a significant upgrade for the Iranian Air Force (IRIAF), whose fleet has largely aged since 1979. Apart from acquiring a few MiG-29 Fulcrum jets in the 1990s, the IRIAF has not procured new fighter jets since the Shah era.
Reports indicate that Iran initially planned to purchase 25 Su-35 jets but has now increased the order to 50. The first batch is expected to include six aircraft. These jets are anticipated to gradually replace some of the F-4 aircraft currently operated by the 31st Tactical Squadron based in Hamadan.
Technological Features of the Su-35SE
A deeply modernized version of the Su-27, the Su-35SE stands out for its superior maneuverability, high supersonic speed, long range, and extensive weapons capacity. The aircraft performs effectively against both air and ground targets and is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic warfare systems.
According to the United Aircraft Corporation, the Su-35SE’s combat efficiency is based on the following features:
- Capability for stealth attacks,
- Advanced target tracking and simultaneous operations,
- Precision-guided attacks without entering enemy air defense zones,
- Flexible mission transitions between air and ground targets.
More Deliveries Expected
In the near future, six additional Su-35SE jets are expected to be delivered to Iran. These aircraft, planned for direct handover by Russian pilots, are part of Iran’s strategy to modernize its air force to meet regional standards.
