After purchasing Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia, Iran issued a strong warning to Israel. The Tehran government emphasised that there would be consequences for “foolish actions” and highlighted its growing military capabilities.
According to Reuters, Ali Shadmani, Deputy Coordinator of the Hatem-ül Enbiya Central Headquarters of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated in an interview with local agency Student News Network that Iran is making military purchases to strengthen its air, land, and naval forces. Referring to Israel, Shadmani remarked, “If the enemy behaves foolishly, they will taste the pain of being hit by our missiles, and no interest in their occupied territories will remain safe.”
Expanding Strategic Partnership with Russia
The purchase of fighter jets by Iran has brought attention back to the strong military and political ties between the two countries. The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement signed in 2023 outlined the goal of “military-technical cooperation” between Russia and Iran.
According to Flug Revue, Iran initially ordered 25 jets, but this number was increased to 50 to replace US-made Grumman F-14A Tomcats and F-4E Phantom II aircraft. The first two Sukhoi Su-35 jets were reportedly delivered in November 2024.
Iran’s Aims and Rising Tensions
The purpose of Iran’s acquisition of these jets remains unclear. However, the timing of the purchase, amidst rising tensions with Israel in the region, has drawn significant attention. In recent months, Tehran has frequently threatened Israel and the US. In a statement made in November, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, “We will give an overwhelming response to any attacks on our country.”
Reactions on Social Media
The Iran Military account posted on social media platform X, stating, “Su-35 fighter jets were purchased, damaged defence systems were replaced, and tested in exercises.”
Sergej Sumlenny, founder of the European Resilience Initiative Centre, posted, “Thanks to POTUS and his advisors, Iran now possesses Russia’s most modern Su-35 jets. Guess what else Iran has acquired, the details of which are not publicly known.”
What’s Next?
It remains uncertain how and when Iran will use these fighter jets. However, attacks by Iran-backed forces in Iraq on Israel were suspended after a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
