India has invited international defence firms to collaborate on its ambitious fifth-generation stealth fighter jet project, which it aims to develop indigenously. According to official documents obtained by Reuters, the Indian Ministry of Defence is calling for “expressions of interest” from global technology and defence companies interested in joining the project.
Domestic Production with Global Collaboration
The project aims to produce a fighter jet equipped with low radar visibility, supersonic cruise capabilities, and advanced sensor systems. Indian defence officials highlight that this move will not only strengthen the country’s military capabilities but also enhance the global competitiveness of its defence industry.
Official Statement: Ministry Confirms Partnership Search
The documents reviewed by Reuters include the following statement from the Ministry of Defence:
“Expressions of interest are invited from foreign entities seeking to participate in the development process of a fifth-generation fighter aircraft.”
Focus on Technology Transfer and Joint Production
India intends to engage interested firms in long-term strategic partnerships centred around technology transfer, joint production, and co-development. The goal is not merely short-term procurement, but the creation of an integrated defence ecosystem that enables India to collaborate with global players.
A Global Vision for India’s Defence Industry
Experts view this step as a crucial element of India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) strategy. It is also seen as part of the country’s broader effort to integrate with global defence technologies and boost its geopolitical stature and defence exports.
