IGA Istanbul Airport Takes Major Steps in Sustainability: 10.7% Reduction in Energy Consumption, 25.6% Reduction in Emissions

IGA Istanbul Airport has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, highlighting its successful efforts toward environmental sustainability goals. In the report, prepared under the mission “Focus on the Earth, Aim for the Future,” a 10.7% reduction in energy consumption and a 25.6% decrease in emissions compared to 2019 were announced.

IGA Focuses on Net Zero Emissions by 2050

To reduce environmental impact, IGA Istanbul Airport has launched a new project in collaboration with TÜBİTAK to combat climate change. According to the plan, which targets reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, reductions of 45% by 2030, 73% by 2040, and achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050 are anticipated.

Significant Advances in Renewable Energy and Waste Recovery

IGA has also shown success in water management and waste recycling, sourcing 35% of its water from recycled sources. IGA recycles 34.66% of its waste back into the economy, aiming to increase this rate to 50% by 2030. With a 200 MW solar power plant currently under construction in Eskişehir, IGA plans to meet all of the airport’s energy needs from renewable sources, further strengthening emissions management.

IGA Istanbul Airport CEO Selahattin Bilgen: “Investments in Environmental and Human Resources Will Continue”

IGA Istanbul Airport CEO Selahattin Bilgen emphasized that their sustainability strategy is centered on investments in human resources and the environment, providing a total of 264,773 training hours in 2023, averaging 32 hours per employee. Bilgen stated, “With IGA Academy and our social investment programs, we continue to create positive value for our community.”
