The United Arab Emirates (UAE) defense industry made a strong debut at the 2025 International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2025). The UAE effectively utilized the exhibition to showcase domestic solutions, secure billions of dollars in contracts, and forge strategic partnerships in the leading defense markets of Western Europe and East Asia, emerging as a rising power on the global stage.

EDGE Group: Export Leader with $2.9 Billion

One of the prominent names at the event was EDGE Group. EDGE completed IDEX 2025 with 16 major contracts and 32 international agreements, generating $2.9 billion in new sales. This success strengthened EDGE’s position as the Middle East’s largest defense technology exporter. In a 9,000 m² area, expanded from 2023, 218 systems were displayed, including a range of innovative technologies such as autonomous platforms, smart weapons, and advanced cybersecurity solutions.

Key Contracts

Some of EDGE Group’s notable sales include:

  • A $1.18 billion air munitions sale contract to the UAE Armed Forces.
  • A $61.8 million sale of GPS PROTECT anti-jamming systems to the UAE Ministry of Defense.
  • A €500 million deal with Fincantieri to support the UAE Navy’s fleet.

In EDGE Group’s early years, exports accounted for just 2% of its sales. However, by 2024, exports had grown to 35% of EDGE’s business. EDGE Group President Faisal al Bannai stated, “With some deals expected to close this year, we anticipate reaching 50% or more of our orders.”

EDGE Group’s Global Growth Strategy

A key factor in the increase in exports is EDGE Group’s international growth strategy. The company now operates with 35 subsidiaries, up from just 20 in 2023. Strategic acquisitions, such as a 50% stake in Brazil-based SIATT and a majority stake in Estonia-based Milrem Robotics, have bolstered EDGE Group’s presence in global markets. Currently, the largest markets for EDGE are the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, with the US still largely untapped.

EDGE Group Introduced Emerging Sensor Fusion Technology at IDEX 2025

In collaboration with its strategic partner MARSS, EDGE Group introduced the latest version of the NiDAR 4D system at IDEX 2025. This system is an advanced command, control, communication, and computing (C4) platform designed to provide multi-domain protection in air, surface, and underwater environments.

The technological innovations behind NiDAR 4D are rooted in Hybrid Intelligence technology, which combines traditional algorithms with artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence, enhancing real-time situational awareness and decision-making.

NiDAR 4D’s Sensor Fusion Capability

NiDAR 4D integrates data from numerous sensors, including radar, electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) cameras, sonar, and radio frequency (RF) detectors, offering single-point monitoring and control through a unified operational interface.

NiDAR 4D currently integrates the following sensors:

  1. Radars

    NiDAR 4D utilizes radar technologies from providers such as Terma and Leonardo DRS RADA Technologies to offer wide-area surface detection and counter-UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) capabilities. These radars can detect air and surface threats, including drones and fast-moving vehicles, from long distances.

  2. Sonar Arrays

    Sonardyne sonar systems are used to detect underwater threats. They provide high-precision defense against divers, mini-submarines, and other underground threats.

  3. EO/IR Sensors

    High-resolution EO/IR cameras provided by L3 Harris offer both day and night imaging capabilities. These gyroscopically stabilized cameras are equipped with cooled medium-wave infrared (MWIR) technology, allowing precise target tracking and classification even in harsh environmental conditions.

  4. Radio Frequency (RF) Direction

    BlueHalo’s RF detection systems are integrated to monitor drone communications and detect air threats through signal propagation. This enables early warning against airborne threats with high precision.

  5. Passive RF Sensors

    Aaronia passive RF sensors are used to detect radio frequency emissions from nearby drones or other electronic devices. These sensors enhance the defense system’s effectiveness by detecting hidden threats.

NiDAR 4D’s Strategic Positioning and Achievements

MARSS announced at IDEX 2025 that it had successfully deployed NiDAR 4D-supported defense systems at two major naval bases in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. These facilities, among the largest naval bases in the region, are now protected by NiDAR’s multi-layered security network. These projects were completed in early 2025 under a contract valued at over $50 million.

NiDAR 4D eliminates the need for multiple disconnected systems by automating detection, classification, and response suggestions through sensor data integration. This reduces the cognitive load on operators, ensuring faster and more efficient operation of defense systems.

Jeniah UCAV
Jeniah UCAV, developed by EDGE Group’s ADASI company and first introduced at IDEX 2023, is a jet-powered unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). Designed for high-speed, low observability (LO) operations in both land and sea areas, Jeniah has a 480 kg payload capacity and reaches speeds of 1,000 km/h. On March 15, 2024, it successfully completed its first autonomous test flight. The Jeniah UCAV has demonstrated advanced capabilities in attack and reconnaissance missions, improving operational efficiency in conflict zones.

Hunter Series Loitering Munition
Developed by EDGE Group’s Halcon subsidiary, the Hunter Series consists of versatile smart munitions designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions and precision strikes. Systems like Hunter 2-S and Hunter 10 provide operational superiority with features such as a 50 km range and 2 kg payload capacity.

NASEF Cruise Missiles
Cruise missiles like the NASEF-20 and NASEF-125 are next-generation subsonic missiles designed for precision strikes against land and sea targets. Equipped with GNSS guidance and active radar homing technologies, these missiles offer ideal solutions for long-range, high-precision attacks.

Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Advanced Technology

NIMR RCV (Robotic Combat Vehicle)
Developed by NIMR, the NIMR RCV stood out at IDEX 2025 with its autonomous capabilities. This 8×8 unmanned ground vehicle enhances battlefield mobility by providing superior firepower. Equipped with Milrem Robotics’ Smart Functionality Kit (MIFIK), the NIMR RCV enables autonomous navigation and multi-asset coordination.

Milrem Havoc 8×8 RCV
Estonian defense company Milrem Robotics introduced the Havoc 8×8 Robotic Combat Vehicle. Featuring a hybrid-electric powertrain, the vehicle offers superior stealth and terrain performance, operating effectively in urban environments and rugged landscapes.

Maritime Security and Autonomous Technologies

MANSUP-ER Anti-Ship Missile
Developed by EDGE Group and SIATT, the MANSUP-ER missile provides precise intervention against maritime and coastal targets, with a range of 200 km and a speed of 950 km/h. It includes active radar guidance for enhanced accuracy.

Falcon AUV
Developed in collaboration with Portugal’s OceanScan, the Falcon AUV is an underwater vehicle designed for mine countermeasures (MCM) and ISR missions. With 48-hour endurance at 5 knots, it enhances maritime security and reduces personnel risk in conflict zones.

170 Detector USV
The 170 Detector USV, introduced by EDGE Group, is a versatile 17-meter unmanned surface vessel designed for underwater mine detection and maritime ISR missions. Equipped with 3D sonar, 360-degree cameras, and a large payload capacity, this vessel ensures effective performance in maritime operations.

High-Resolution Satellite Solutions

EYE-SAT EO Satellite
Developed by EDGE Group’s FADA (Falcon Advanced Dynamics Arabia), the EYE-SAT EO Satellite is an electro-optic satellite designed for high-resolution ISR missions. Offering a resolution of 0.5 meters, this satellite supports applications such as environmental monitoring and urban planning. It also strengthens the UAE’s space capabilities by providing quantum-secure communications.

Calidus Strengthens Armored Vehicle Portfolio at IDEX 2025: Wahash IFV and Light Infantry Combat Vehicle Unveiled

BAE-based Calidus Land Systems introduced key innovations at IDEX 2025, reinforcing its strong position in the defense industry. The Tawazun Council signed a $642 million contract for the Wahash 8×8 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), which significantly contributes to the UAE’s goals of enhancing local defense production capabilities.

The Wahash IFV is a modular armored platform that integrates the UAE’s BMP-3 turret, first unveiled at IDEX 2019. Equipped with a 100 mm main gun, a 30 mm coaxial cannon, and Kornet anti-tank missiles, this vehicle stands out with its 724 horsepower engine, providing superior mobility in desert terrain, and independent hydro-pneumatic suspension system. The armored personnel carrier has amphibious capabilities, a combat weight of 32.5 tons, and can carry up to eight crew members.

In addition, the Light Infantry Fighting Vehicle (LIFV) made its debut at IDEX 2025. Designed for air transportability, this vehicle is equipped with a 30 mm 2A42 automatic cannon and an Aselsan Nefer unmanned turret. Offering a range of 700 km and a speed of 130 km/h, the LIFV’s modular design allows it to be adapted for various configurations, making it an attractive option for both regional and international markets.

The MAESTRAL joint venture between EDGE Group and Fincantieri signed a significant €500 million ($524 million) contract with the UAE Navy. This agreement covers lifecycle support and logistics services for the UAE Navy’s fleet of 82 ships, including Abu Dhabi-class corvettes, Falaj-class patrol vessels, and Ghannatha boats.

This contract, awarded by the Tawazun Council, designates MAESTRAL as the Industrial Strategic Partner and aims to enhance the agility and strength of the UAE Navy in countering evolving maritime threats. The ISS program, a combination of Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding (ADSB) and Fincantieri’s global shipbuilding capabilities, focuses on providing advanced maintenance solutions.

EDGE Group CEO Hamad Al Marar emphasized that this agreement demonstrates confidence in MAESTRAL’s capabilities, while Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero highlighted the partnership as a crucial step in expanding Fincantieri’s influence in the region and fostering critical industrial partnerships.

GM Defense and EDGE Group Strategic Partnership

At IDEX 2025, GM Defense, a subsidiary of General Motors, and EDGE Group announced a strategic partnership to develop light tactical vehicles for military customers across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

The partnership introduced the NGTV-H (Next-Generation Tactical Vehicle-Hybrid), equipped with a hybrid propulsion system, offering extended range and stealth features for a variety of tactical missions. Additionally, the possibility of local production of GM Defense’s Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) in the UAE was also discussed.

Steve duMont, President of GM Defense, stated that the collaboration not only aims to bring NGTV to the UAE but also to initiate a localized production process tailored to the region’s needs.

Turkish Synergies: EDGE Group’s Strong Partnerships with Turkish Defense Companies

IDEX 2025 marked a significant milestone in EDGE Group’s deepening partnerships with Turkish defense companies, enhancing regional defense capabilities. These collaborations strengthen technological synergies and expand defense infrastructure across the region.

Korkut Air Defense System Integrated into Wahash 8×8

EDGE subsidiary Calidus and ASELSAN announced the integration of the Korkut 35mm self-propelled air defense system into the Wahash 8×8 armored vehicle. Previously designed for tracked platforms, the Korkut has now been adapted for mobile engagements on the Wahash 8×8, significantly enhancing its capabilities.

New features include:

  • Twin 35mm automatic cannons with a rate of fire of 1,100 rounds per minute
  • ATOM 35mm programmable airburst munitions effective against drones and missiles
  • Fixed turret with radar and electro-optical tracking systems for mobile engagements

This adaptation significantly enhances the Wahash 8×8’s capabilities, providing critical support for the UAE’s mechanized forces. ASELSAN’s technical support and plans for localized production of critical subsystems are also underway.

Hürkuş Joint Production Agreement

Calidus and Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) signed an agreement for the joint production of the Hürkuş training aircraft. This partnership aims to enhance collaboration for the production and supply of Hürkuş to the UAE and other regional markets, strengthening local manufacturing capacities and fostering a stronger regional defense alliance.

This cooperation is a key step in expanding Turkish defense industry presence in global markets and enhancing recognition of local production capabilities across broader geographies.

Cyber/Electronic Warfare (EW): Preparing for New Battlefronts

GPS-PROTECT and Sovereign Communications

EDGE Group signed a contract worth 227 million AED ($61.8 million) with the UAE Ministry of Defense to supply GPS-PROTECT anti-jamming systems.

GPS-PROTECT, developed by EDGE’s subsidiary SIGN4L, is a compact system designed to protect Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers from jamming and interference, ensuring uninterrupted command, control, and navigation for air, land, and sea platforms. This system addresses a major security vulnerability for modern militaries reliant on satellite-guided operations and offers advanced signal processing to counter spoofing and interference threats.

UAE’s Defense Strategy and Future Prospects

The UAE’s defense industry strategy is undergoing a significant shift toward becoming a global leader in asymmetric warfare technologies. Prioritizing areas with high export potential and low entry barriers, such as drones, smart munitions, and electronic warfare systems, the strategy positions the UAE as a flexible and cost-competitive supplier in emerging markets.

Particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, where UAVs and electronic warfare threats are rising, EDGE Group aims to meet the demand for affordable and modular solutions. This export-driven approach is part of a broader economic vision to diversify the UAE’s economy beyond hydrocarbons, with a goal of increasing defense exports from $1.2 billion in 2020 to $4.8 billion in 2024, and reaching $20 billion annually by 2030.

The UAE is focusing on niche sectors, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare, and cost-effective procurement, instead of competing directly in large platform markets like fighter jets and main battle tanks. This strategy aligns with global trends, including the growing role of UAVs, the central role of electronic warfare, and the rise of cost-driven procurement.

Geopolitical realities play a crucial role in shaping this strategy. The UAE aims to strengthen its position by establishing leadership in niche areas before investing in large platforms. As the Emirati industry gains dominance in these niches, it may eventually consider investing in large platforms and expanding to become a major defense contractor.

Strength of the UAE’s Defense Ecosystem

The UAE’s defense sector has become a critical strategic facilitator for Western defense technologies, particularly when market access is limited due to geopolitical sensitivities or export restrictions. The UAE defense ecosystem, led by EDGE Group and the Tawazun Council, plays a key intermediary role in technology transfer agreements, joint ventures, and localized production initiatives, making it an important hub for Western defense technology in the region.
