Five crew members from Air India were detained at Zurich Airport for not carrying valid Crew Member Certificates (CMC). The incident occurred after the crew, who arrived in Zurich on two separate flights within the last week, were found to have documents that did not comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
According to sources, four crew members did not carry a CMC, while one was using an invalid CMC. Previously, it was possible to obtain a temporary CMC at Zurich Airport for 10 euros, but authorities changed this practice on February 5th.
Detention in a Small Cell
Sources related to the incident reported that the crew was held in a small cell designated for detainees for a certain period. The crew members were only allowed to leave the cell to use the restroom, and their access to mobile phones was restricted. Communication was not possible until local airline staff intervened.
What is a CMC?
A Crew Member Certificate (CMC) is an identification card that allows pilots and cabin crew to move easily through international airports. This certificate is issued by ICAO and must be valid.
Air India Statement
Air India officials confirmed that the crew was transferred to a transit hotel and stated that four of the crew members remain in Zurich following the incident.
