Iberia Becomes the World’s First A321XLR Operator: New-Generation Aircraft Prepares for Its First Transatlantic Flight

Iberia stands out as the first airline to add Airbus’s new-generation, long-range single-aisle A321XLR model to its fleet. The aircraft is set to make its first transatlantic flight in November on the Madrid-Boston route, after already starting test flights on Iberia’s European routes.

Touted as the world’s newest and most efficient single-aisle aircraft, the Airbus A321XLR is powered by CFM LEAP-1A engines and is praised for its game-changing features. Airbus CEO Christian Scherer described the A321XLR as an “innovative aircraft that opens up new destinations,” and it is expected to play a key role in Iberia’s expanding network.

Comfortable and Economical Flight Experience with the Airbus A321XLR

The new-generation A321XLR added to Iberia’s fleet has a two-class configuration with a total capacity of 182 passengers, designed especially to enhance comfort on long flights. The business class offers fully reclining seats with direct aisle access, providing a more spacious and comfortable travel experience.

Airbus CEO: “A321XLR Ushers in a New Era in Air Connectivity”

Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Christian Scherer stated that the A321XLR model presents “entirely new opportunities for airline connections, opening a new chapter for the industry.” Scherer emphasized that this aircraft demonstrates Airbus’s ongoing commitment to innovation, catering to customer needs. He also highlighted the model’s reduced fuel consumption and environmentally friendly features, calling the A321XLR a “source of pride” for the Airbus family.

A321XLR: Longer Range, Lower Fuel Consumption

The new-generation Airbus A321XLR model offers 15% more range than its predecessor, the A321LR. With a range of 4,700 nautical miles (nm), the aircraft provides economic advantages on long-haul flights and boasts up to 30% fuel savings, making it a more eco-friendly option. It also contributes to sustainable aviation goals with lower NOx emissions and reduced noise levels.

Over 500 Orders for the Airbus A321XLR

Since its launch, Airbus has received more than 500 orders for the A321XLR model worldwide. The aircraft made its first flight in June 2022 and has been certified for flight safety and performance after undergoing comprehensive testing programs.
