On 30 May 2025, Hungary’s Ministry of Defence officially announced the delivery of its first L-39NG Skyfox jet trainer aircraft, part of a strategic defence agreement signed with Aero Vodochody. This delivery marks the first tangible step in Hungary’s comprehensive air force modernisation effort.
Redefining Pilot Training with Next-Generation Jets
The newly delivered L-39NG jets will serve as the second tier of pilot training, following propeller-driven Zlin aircraft. These jets are designed not only for advanced pilot instruction but also for reconnaissance missions. Equipped with modern mission systems capable of simulating real combat conditions, the L-39NG platform will effectively prepare Hungarian pilots for fifth-generation combat scenarios.
To support this training process, a new simulation centre is also being established. Additionally, Hungarian pilots have already been participating in specialised training programmes in the Czech Republic.
12 Jets to Be Delivered by 2028
As part of the modernisation programme, Hungary is set to receive a total of 12 aircraft by 2028:
-
8 L-39NGs for training purposes
-
4 L-39NGs configured for reconnaissance
This acquisition is intended to bolster Hungary’s sovereign defence capacity while fulfilling its NATO alliance responsibilities.
Strategic Remarks from Officials
At the handover ceremony, Zsolt Kutnyánszky, State Secretary at Hungary’s Ministry of Defence, stated:
“This programme is not merely a procurement—it is a long-term investment that strengthens Hungary’s strategic autonomy and demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling NATO obligations.”
He also highlighted that this modernisation effort would enhance integration with Hungary’s aviation industry ecosystem and contribute to the development of domestic defence capabilities.
