Helicopter Crash in Germany: Two Pilots Killed

On Sunday, February 9, 2025, a helicopter crash near Greding, in the Bavarian region of Germany, claimed the lives of two individuals. The ultra-light helicopter crashed in a rural area, resulting in the deaths of two hobby pilots, aged 50 and 76.

Following the accident, rescue teams faced challenges securing the wreckage on Monday due to difficult conditions. Police spokesperson Janine Mendel stated, “The rescue operation is relatively complex as the crash occurred in the middle of the forest.”

Cause of the Crash Remains Unknown

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined. Authorities announced that once the wreckage is secured, it will be sent to the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation in Braunschweig. The public prosecutor’s office has also appointed an external expert to examine the incident.

A specialist from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, along with officials from the Schwabach Criminal Investigation Department, inspected the crash site on Sunday. However, authorities cautioned that determining the cause of the accident could take several weeks.

Witnesses and Initial Findings

The crash occurred in the Hofberg area of Greding and was witnessed by several people. According to police reports, the two individuals aboard the helicopter died at the scene. Preliminary investigations confirmed that both were hobby pilots and that neither owned the helicopter.

The private helicopter had taken off from the Neumarkt district and crashed near the Hofberg model airfield. Local fire chief Franz-Xaver Steib stated that one of the victims was found outside the helicopter and that rescue efforts were initiated immediately, but were unsuccessful.

Psychological Support Provided

Psychosocial support was offered to eyewitnesses and rescue workers affected by the crash. Fire chief Steib noted that such incidents are rare in the region, saying, “Unfortunately, this is an exceptional case. Aircraft and helicopters fly over our area daily, but accidents like this are extremely rare.”

Investigation Ongoing

As the investigation continues, authorities planned to recover the wreckage on Monday. Experts from the Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, along with criminal police teams, are involved in the inquiry. Witness statements are being collected, and investigators are examining the pilots’ flight route and intentions.
