Harsh Response from Hava-Sen to Layoffs at Turkish Airlines: “Flight Safety at Risk”

Hava-Sen has issued a statement regarding the recent increase in layoffs at Turkish Airlines (THY), claiming that the developments threaten workplace harmony and flight safety. The union alleges that pilots and cabin crew are being dismissed without due regard for their efforts and performance.

Hava-Sen stated that, over the past six months, many pilots have been dismissed based on decisions made by the Flight Board, Disciplinary Board, and Executive Committee. The statement criticised the authorised union, Hava-İş, for failing to appoint a pilot representative to these decision-making bodies, labelling the move as “irresponsible”.

“The Disciplinary Board is under the employer’s control. In the event of a tied vote, the chairman’s vote counts as two, which always results in decisions favouring the employer,” the statement read.

“Some Dismissed Based on Tattling and Slander”

The union claims that some employees were dismissed based on unproven allegations and witness statements of questionable credibility. It argued that such practices create an atmosphere of distrust and unrest in the workplace.

“Flight Safety Risk Is Increasing”

The statement highlighted that these developments have led to a serious drop in motivation, particularly among pilots, which poses a direct risk to flight safety.

“A pilot without job security will experience a decline in performance, sense of belonging, and loyalty. This puts both the employee and passengers at risk,” it said.

Strong Criticism of Hava-İş: “You Remained Silent”

At the end of its statement, Hava-Sen also issued harsh criticism of the authorised union Hava-İş, accusing it of remaining silent in the face of member dismissals. It claimed that Hava-İş has limited its activities to “merely distributing Turkish delight and chocolates”.

The union concluded its call with a message of solidarity and commitment to continue the struggle on behalf of all aviation workers:

“Standing with workers requires not only authority but also heart. We are here.”
