A bizarre incident occurred on TAP Air Portugal’s flight TP-1865 from Lisbon to Ponta Delgado, where 132 hamsters, transported in special cages in the cargo hold, escaped after landing due to damaged cages.
The Airbus A321-200N completed the flight without issues, but upon inspection in Ponta Delgado, it was discovered that one of the cages had been damaged, allowing the hamsters to roam free.
Aircraft Grounded in Ponta Delgado
A detailed investigation was launched to determine if the escaped hamsters caused any damage to the aircraft systems. The return flight, scheduled for the next morning, was canceled. So far, 116 hamsters have been recaptured, but 16 remain missing, keeping the aircraft grounded.
Flight Cancellations and Crisis Management
TAP Airlines initiated extensive searches on and around the aircraft and is offering compensation options to affected passengers. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the aircraft is fully safe before it returns to service.
