Pro-Palestinian activists in the UK staged a striking protest against military aircraft allegedly transporting weapons used in attacks on Gaza. Two members of the group “Palestine Action” entered the Royal Air Force base at Brize Norton in Oxfordshire and sprayed red paint on two military aircraft.
Footage shared on social media showed one of the activists approaching Airbus Voyager refuelling planes on a scooter and spraying red paint onto one of the jet engines. The activists stated that this symbolic action aimed to draw attention to the UK’s indirect contribution to civilian deaths in Gaza.
“Flights Are Carrying Death to Gaza”
In a statement by Palestine Action, it was claimed that daily flights take place from the Brize Norton base to the Akrotiri base in Southern Cyprus, allegedly for refuelling U.S. and Israeli warplanes. The group argued that despite issuing public condemnations of Israel, the UK continues to provide logistical military support in practice.
The statement included the following remarks:
“While the UK publicly criticises the Israeli government, it flies spy planes over Gaza, provides military cargo support, and refuels warplanes. This contradictory stance contributes to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.”
Ministry of Defence: Vandalism
The UK Ministry of Defence described the protest at Brize Norton as an act of “vandalism.” The Ministry condemned the damage to Royal Air Force assets and announced that security measures would be reviewed.
Group Previously Targeted US Aircraft
Since the beginning of the attacks on Gaza, Palestine Action has carried out various direct actions across the UK. The group, previously known for its protests against arms manufacturers and the supply chain, carried out a similar action in May by spraying red paint on a US military aircraft in Ireland.
Call to the Public
Palestine Action officials called on the international community to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and emphasised that the UK government must adhere to the principles of transparency and accountability in its Gaza policies.
