The European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) has signed a four-year contract with Airbus Defence and Space (ADAS) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to deploy Heron Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) for enhancing border security and supporting search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
Heron Drones Begin Operations in 2025
Set to be operational in early 2025, the Heron RPAS will feature extended flight endurance of over 30 hours and advanced sensors to provide real-time surveillance data to Frontex’s operations center in Warsaw and host countries’ control centers.
Planned Operations
- Regions of Deployment: Greece, Italy, and Malta.
- Surveillance Capabilities: Real-time data transmission using Line of Sight (LOS) and Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) through satellite communication.
- Operational Use: Border monitoring, maritime patrol, combating human smuggling, and search-and-rescue missions.
Heron RPAS Specifications and Features
The Heron drone, developed by IAI, belongs to the Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) class and offers wide application in civil, commercial, and military domains.
