As the aviation industry faces major changes on a global scale, freelance piloting has become a hot topic in Turkey. Zafer Yeşilgül, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Air Taxi Operators Association, emphasized that freelance piloting practices should be implemented in Turkey.
In a written statement issued by the Air Taxi Operators Association, Yeşilgül highlighted the results of a comprehensive study initiated by the European Commission in 2017-2018. He pointed out that in Europe, more than one in five pilots are employed as freelancers, based on surveys and case studies involving approximately 6,000 pilots and 2,200 cabin crew members.
Yeşilgül stated that 9% of pilots in Europe are self-employed, with the majority of these pilots working for low-cost carriers. Stressing the need for the rapid expansion of freelance piloting practices in Turkey, Yeşilgül expressed that this practice would provide significant flexibility for air taxi operators and charter companies.
Yeşilgül noted that freelance piloting would particularly benefit businesses during peak seasons and for special flight requests. However, he emphasized the importance of preserving social and working conditions, strengthening legal regulations, and ensuring fair competition.
While acknowledging that freelance work offers career development opportunities for young pilots, Yeşilgül underscored the importance of preventing its abuse. As the Air Taxi Operators Association, Yeşilgül stated that lessons should be drawn from examples in Europe for the successful implementation of freelance piloting in Turkey, and steps should be taken to improve the social and working conditions of pilots.
Yeşilgül highlighted the support of the Air Taxi Operators Association for the widespread adoption of freelance piloting in Turkey, emphasizing that industry stakeholders have significant responsibilities for the sustainable and fair implementation of this model.
