A terrifying incident occurred aboard Flysafair’s Boeing 737-800, flight FA-711, in South Africa. During the final stages of the George-Johannesburg flight, the captain pilot reported feeling unwell and handed over control of the aircraft to the first officer (FO). However, shortly afterward, he lost consciousness and fainted.
Having a pilot among the passengers turned out to be a stroke of luck. While the FO requested priority from air traffic control (ATC), he also asked if there was an experienced pilot on board. Fortunately, a qualified pilot among the passengers assisted the FO with radio communications and checklist procedures.
A Calm and Successful Landing
With the support he received, the FO managed to execute a smooth landing in Johannesburg. Medical teams immediately attended to the captain upon arrival, and the aircraft was safely taxied to the apron.
In a statement from Flysafair, it was confirmed that the captain had felt unwell during the final stages of the flight and subsequently transferred control to the FO. While the airline did not disclose further details regarding the captain’s health, they emphasized that the situation was handled professionally and passenger safety was ensured.
