Diplomatic engagement with Syria, behind-the-scenes moves by international organisations, and strategic cooperation among regional actors are accelerating. Developments in the region are signalling a shift toward normalisation of relations with the Arab world, with noteworthy steps being taken in critical areas such as security and air traffic.

UK NGO ‘Intermediate’ Played a Role in Assad Regime’s Political Rehabilitation

It has come to light that London-based non-governmental organisation Intermediate supported former Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa politically nearly two years before the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Sources familiar with the matter confirmed to Independent Arabia that the initiative was led by Intermediate, founded in 2011 by Tony Blair’s former chief of staff, Jonathan Powell.

The organisation specialises in mediation and confidential dialogue processes. Among its founders is former UN Yemen envoy Martin Griffiths. With Claire Hajaj appointed as director in December 2024, the organisation aims to expand its role in conflict resolution.

Former US Ambassador Robert Ford Makes Striking Statement

Former US Ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, stated that a British organisation supported Ahmed al-Sharaa’s return to political life. Ford confirmed he had collaborated with the organisation in an advisory capacity, although the Syrian government dismissed these claims as “false”.

Jordan and Syria Emphasise Border Security and Economic Cooperation

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed border security, stability, and economic cooperation during a phone call. The conversation underlined high-level coordination in sectors such as water, energy, and trade.

Jordan expressed its support for Syria’s sovereignty and reconstruction process, while the Syrian government stated it was open to improving relations with Jordan. This rapprochement comes amid a broader wave of normalisation efforts between Syria and the Arab world.

Flydubai to Resume Direct Flights to Damascus

UAE-based airline Flydubai will resume daily direct flights to Damascus as of 1 June 2025. CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith said, “Damascus holds strategic importance for regional connectivity. We are pleased to return to this route after 12 years.”

The move follows flight approval granted by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority last month. Syrian Airlines also announced the resumption of reciprocal flights with the UAE.

Military Coordination Deal Between Turkey and Israel in Syria

According to Israeli media reports, Turkey and Israel have reached a military coordination agreement aimed at preventing direct conflict in Syria. The deal was reportedly shaped through secret talks in Baku mediated by Azerbaijan.

While Tel Aviv seeks to maintain the demilitarised status of southern Syria, it has expressed concerns over Turkey’s new base construction initiatives. Israel has also raised the possibility of US mediation.

Israeli officials stated that “red lines” have been established in the Palmyra region and that a permanent coordination mechanism will be developed through regular meetings.
