Ticket Refunds and Exchange Rights
According to a statement from AZAL, passengers who purchased tickets for the now-suspended Kazan Airport flights will have the right to either receive a full refund or change their tickets free of charge.
Previously, AZAL had already halted flights to several Russian cities, including Mineralnye Vody, Sochi, Volgograd, Ufa, Samara, Saratov, Nizhny Novgorod, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, and Makhachkala. With the addition of Kazan, the number of cities with suspended flights has reached 11.
Flight Safety and a Past Incident
Debates about flight safety between Azerbaijan and Russia gained prominence following a tragic incident on December 25. An AZAL passenger plane traveling from Baku to Grozny was struck while in Russian airspace and redirected to Aktau, Kazakhstan.
During the emergency landing, the crash resulted in:
- The death of 38 out of 67 passengers,
- The survival of 29 passengers.
This incident led to diplomatic tension between Azerbaijan and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally called Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to apologize for the event.
As of now, AZAL has not announced when the flights will resume.
