Aeroflot Flight 593, en route to Hong Kong in 1994, ended tragically after a pilot allowed his children into the cockpit. Discover the shocking details.
In 1994, Aeroflot Flight 593, en route from Moscow to Hong Kong, ended in tragedy. The crash occurred when a pilot allowed his children to access the cockpit and take control of the aircraft. All 63 passengers and 12 crew members on board lost their lives. The chilling details of the accident were uncovered through black box voice recordings.
The Start of the Tragedy
On March 23, 1994, Aeroflot’s Airbus A310 departed Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow bound for Hong Kong. During the flight, relief pilot Yaroslav Vladimirovich Kudrinsky invited his children, 12-year-old Yana and 16-year-old Eldar, into the cockpit. While the autopilot was engaged, Kudrinsky allowed his children to interact with the controls.
Eldar accidentally disengaged the autopilot, causing the plane to go off course for approximately 30 seconds.
Critical Moments Before the Crash
Black box recordings reveal that the plane began veering to the right, prompting Eldar to realize something was wrong. Despite recognizing the issue, the three pilots on board failed to regain full control. During this time, the Airbus A310 entered a 90-degree roll, an angle it was not designed to sustain, causing it to lose altitude rapidly.
Although the pilots managed to pull the aircraft out of its dive temporarily, they miscalculated engine thrust, resulting in the plane stalling again. In a desperate attempt to save the plane, Kudrinsky yelled at his son, “Get to the back, Eldar!” The black box recording ends with Kudrinsky telling his children, “Leave immediately! Everything is fine.”
Ultimately, the plane crashed into the Kuznetsk Alatau mountain range, killing everyone on board.
Post-Crash Investigation
Technical examinations revealed no mechanical issues with the aircraft. Experts determined that the crash was entirely due to the pilot allowing his children to handle the cockpit controls. Most tragically, investigators concluded that the crash could have been averted had the pilots re-engaged autopilot instead of attempting manual control.
Aeroflot’s Policy Changes
Following the incident, Aeroflot announced stricter cockpit discipline protocols. According to aviation regulations, unauthorized persons are strictly prohibited from entering the cockpit.
