Flames Erupt from Boeing 737 NG Aircraft, Disaster Narrowly Averted!

A Boeing 737 NG belonging to Boliviana de Aviación (tail number CP-2923, manufactured in 2002) experienced an engine fire while preparing for takeoff from Cochabamba Airport (CBB) to Viru Viru, Santa Cruz (VVVI). The incident, which occurred on flight OB 648, caused panic among passengers.

Emergency Evacuation Conducted

Just minutes before takeoff, a fire in one of the aircraft’s engines triggered emergency protocols. The crew utilised emergency evacuation slides to safely evacuate passengers. While passengers were swiftly evacuated, the situation created significant panic as efforts were made to contain the damage caused by the fire.

Cause of the Fire: Mechanical Failure

It is believed that the fire, which occurred on 27 January, resulted from a mechanical failure. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the flames and prevent further spread. Authorities have stated that a detailed investigation is underway and technical assessments are continuing.

Operational Safety Alert at Cochabamba Airport

The Bolivian Air Navigation and Airport Company (NAABOL) announced that, following the fire, runway 14/32 at Cochabamba Airport was temporarily closed, classifying the event as an “operational safety incident.” Airport staff have since accelerated efforts to restore normal flight operations as quickly as possible.
