Flights between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have resumed after nearly four years, with the first journey on the Dushanbe-Bishkek route.
Kyrgyzstan Airports JSC spokesperson Alena Khomenko announced on social media that a plane belonging to Tajik airline Somon Air had successfully landed at Manas International Airport after departing from Dushanbe.
Reason for the Four-Year Suspension: Border Dispute
Following armed clashes in 2021 due to border disputes between the two countries, Kyrgyzstan imposed restrictions on the entry of Tajik citizens and suspended Dushanbe-Bishkek flights in May 2021. In June 2021, Kyrgyz authorities decided to close their airspace and land borders to Tajikistan.
Air Travel Resumes Following Political Rapprochement
Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon and Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov signed an agreement in Bishkek yesterday to resolve border issues between the two nations. Following this agreement, it was announced that Dushanbe-Bishkek-Dushanbe flights would resume from 14 March.
