The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that Turkish Airlines (THY) has resumed flights to Benghazi, Libya, after a 10-year hiatus. The flights, scheduled three times per week, hold significant importance for strengthening the historical ties between Turkey and Libya.
Turkey’s Global Power in Aviation
Highlighting Turkey’s geographical advantage, Minister Uraloğlu noted that the country is situated in a region where 1.5 billion people live within a 4-hour flight radius. He emphasized the importance of aviation investments in utilizing this advantage and stated:
“We have transformed Turkey into one of the countries with the largest flight network in the world. Through Turkish Airlines, we connect continents and cultures. Air transportation has become an integral part of our economic growth and increasing prosperity.”
First Flight to Benghazi After a Decade
Minister Uraloğlu recalled that Turkish Airlines had initially started flights to Benghazi on May 5, 2009, but suspended operations on January 5, 2015, due to security concerns. Speaking about the first flight after 10 years, he said:
“We will carry passengers to Benghazi with three weekly flights. This addition complements our ongoing flights to Tripoli, marking a significant step in Turkey-Libya relations.”
New Routes: Santiago and Sydney
In addition to Benghazi, Minister Uraloğlu touched on other new Turkish Airlines routes. He announced the resumption of flights to Santiago, Chile, as of December 18, 2024. Moreover, Turkish Airlines has launched flights on the Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur-Sydney route, making Sydney its second destination in Australia after Melbourne.
Minister Uraloğlu stated that Turkish Airlines reached 349 international destinations by the end of 2024 and expressed confidence that this number would further increase in 2025.
