Due to a forest fire affecting the Gaziemir district of İzmir, flight operations at Adnan Menderes Airport have been temporarily suspended. Located close to the fire zone, the airport has been closed to both arrivals and departures because of heavy smoke, reduced visibility, and ongoing operations by firefighting aircraft.
Authorities reported that some incoming flights to İzmir were diverted to airports in nearby provinces. Flight information screens showed that many flights were either delayed or cancelled. The airport is expected to resume normal operations once the fire is brought under control.
According to İzmir Governor Süleyman Elban, large-scale forest fires are affecting three districts in the province, leading to the evacuation of some residential areas. Firefighting efforts involve 1,100 firefighters, 6 firefighting aircraft, 23 tankers, and various construction vehicles. However, strong winds reaching speeds of 70 to 117 km/h are making aerial interventions extremely challenging.
Officials have urged citizens to check flight information with airlines or on official websites before heading to the airport.
