Fire Brigade Crisis at Ercan! Unions May Appeal to ICAO

The President of the Cyprus Turkish Public Servants’ Union (KTAMS) and the Cyprus Federation of Labour and Workers’ Unions (KİEF), Güven Bengihan, has announced that they may take the issue of unresolved problems within the firefighting unit at Ercan Airport to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

In a written statement, Bengihan highlighted that they have long been drawing attention to the serious safety risks at Ercan Airport, but the authorities have failed to heed their warnings. He pointed out that firefighting vehicles and aviation system equipment have not been maintained or repaired and that 29 newly recruited firefighters have not been provided with the necessary protective clothing, preventing them from taking shifts.

“We Condemn the Ministry of Public Works and Transport”

Accusing the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of negligence, Bengihan stated that despite all their constructive calls, no action has been taken, and they strongly condemn this inaction.

Bengihan added, “This is the third time we are issuing a warning regarding the issues within the firefighting unit at Ercan Airport. If the necessary measures are not taken immediately, we will be forced to escalate the matter to an international platform, namely ICAO.”
