As tensions rise in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian forces have executed a striking attack. The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Units launched a drone swarm targeting the infrastructure of the Engels-2 military airbase in Russia’s Saratov region.
Target: TU-160 Strategic Bombers and Infrastructure
According to Ukraine’s statement:
- The airstrike targeted Engels-2 base, home to the TU-95MS and TU-160 bombers belonging to Russia’s 22nd Aviation Division.
- The attack was carried out by Ukraine’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) units with support from other forces.
The statement noted that the strike caused a fire in the tanks at the “Kristal” industrial facility, where special fuel for TU-160 strategic bombers is stored.
Ukraine’s Statement: Strategic Aviation Capabilities Targeted
The Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on their Telegram account that the operation aimed to weaken Russia’s strategic aviation capabilities:
“A complex operation spanning days to reduce the enemy’s strategic aviation capabilities has been completed.”
Russia’s Reaction and Regional Tensions
While Russia has yet to officially confirm the incident, the Engels-2 airbase has been a target of similar attacks in the past. The strike has reignited concerns over the security of strategic infrastructure in Russia’s Black Sea region.
