Outerlink announced this week that it has received Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Air IP integrated Wi-Fi system installed on Sikorsky S-76 helicopters. This significant certification follows earlier approvals for the Leonardo AW139 helicopters, expanding the system’s reach in the rotorcraft market.
What is the Air IP System?
Air IP is an integrated Wi-Fi system equipped with a multi-cell data router. It provides reliable bandwidth for up to 10 devices simultaneously, even during high-speed flights exceeding 140 knots and at several thousand feet in altitude. Its patented bonding technology enables seamless connectivity by dynamically switching between networks and cell towers, even in challenging environments.
Features and Advantages of the System
The Air IP system is specifically designed for law enforcement agencies, as well as corporate operators and Bell 407 owners. It offers HD video download links and enhanced bandwidth for upload and return links. Optional features include Iridium satellite tracking and integration with the AXIS Command and Control platform for advanced mapping and communication. During takeoff and landing, real-time notifications, along with location data, can be sent via email, SMS, or WhatsApp.
Installation Process
Sterling Helicopters, responsible for the installations on the AW139 and S-76, has developed a specialized installation kit to facilitate the adoption of this new technology. This allows users to quickly benefit from the system’s advantages.
