On Monday, July 21, the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, was rocked by a major aviation disaster. An F-7 BGI fighter jet from the Bangladesh Air Force crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
According to an official statement from the Bangladesh Army, at least 18 people, including the pilot, lost their lives in the crash. More than 160 people were injured to varying degrees, with several transported to hospitals due to severe burns.
Plane Crashed During Exam Hours
The aircraft had taken off from the AK Khandar Air Force Base near the capital at 1:06 p.m. local time. Shortly after take-off, it crashed into a densely populated school campus in Dhaka’s Uttara district. The fact that students were in class or sitting exams at the time of the incident contributed to the high number of casualties.
Investigation Underway
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the public relations arm of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, stated that detailed investigations at the crash site are ongoing. While the cause of the crash has yet to be determined, authorities have confirmed that a high-level investigation committee has been formed.
ISPR Statement:
“The cause of the crash is not yet known. A comprehensive investigation will be conducted, evaluating both technical and operational data.”
Information about the crash is still developing. Officials have warned that the number of dead and injured may rise. Hospitals have been placed on high alert, and medical teams have been mobilised to treat the wounded.
