The European Sivas Association (ASBİR) Netherlands Branch has voiced the expectations and concerns of expatriates from Sivas living in Europe by sending a letter to various airlines. The association emphasized the need for direct and affordable flights from major European cities to Sivas.
“Let’s Bridge the Distance,” Says ASBİR President
ASBİR Netherlands President Göksel Soyugüzel highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of expatriates and the region, stating, “Let’s make distant places closer.”
Issues of Overpriced Tickets and Lack of Flights
Soyugüzel pointed out that ticket prices for flights from Europe to Turkey, especially during summer, often reach exorbitant levels, making it difficult for expatriates to travel to their hometowns. He also noted that a previous request submitted to airlines on February 24, 2022, had not received a positive response.
He emphasized that it has become essential to establish direct flights from key European cities, such as Basel, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Amsterdam, to Sivas.
Benefits of Direct Flights
Soyugüzel outlined several advantages of direct flights from Europe to Sivas, emphasizing their importance for expatriates and the region’s development:
- Tourism: Increased tourism potential for Sivas and surrounding areas, boosting local businesses.
- Economy: Easier international trade and business connections.
- Community Ties: Strengthened bonds between expatriates and their homeland.
- Sports and Culture: Greater international visibility for events in Sivas and new opportunities for the youth.
A Call to Turkish Airlines and Other Carriers
The letter emphasized the critical role Turkish Airlines (THY) could play by initiating regular and reasonably priced direct flights from Europe to Sivas. It suggested that such a move by THY could encourage other airlines to offer similar services, fostering competition and ultimately reducing ticket prices for travelers.
The association concluded by urging airlines to take action, underscoring the broader social, economic, and cultural benefits such flights would bring.
